The Implant

Dental implants are posts made of a biocompatible material, usually titanium. These posts are surgically implanted directly into the bone structure of the jaw. It is important to note that some patients may require bone grafts if there isn't enough natural bone to support the implant.

After surgery, during the healing process, the implant bonds to the bone through a process known as osseointegration. This means that the bone heals around the post with no intervening soft tissue, firmly anchoring it in the jaw.

Once fully healed, a variety of restorations can be applied to the implant, depending on the specific needs of each patient.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Restorations supported by implants are sturdier, perfectly replicating the look and feel of your natural teeth. You'll be able to smile with confidence again with a full set of teeth.

Aesthetics aren't the only improvement that implants have over other restorative methods. They are the only form of restoration that can prevent resorption, which is a reduction in bone mass and shifting of dental structure that occurs due to tooth loss.

Resorption commonly causes sunken cheeks and a prematurely aged appearance. However, the implant acts just like a natural root, stimulating the jaw bone through chewing and other normal functions. This maintains the integrity of your dental structure while also returning the full strength of your bite.

Dr. Marcus Jean recommends implants for any qualified patient looking to restore their full smile after experiencing tooth loss. Our knowledgeable and compassionate staff strive to give each patient the very best for their dental health.

Restorations That Are Right for You

There are several different types of restorations that can be fitted to dental implants. Which is right for you will depend on your unique needs.

For multiple adjacent missing teeth, a bridge can be fabricated and placed with two implants to anchor the ends. Unlike traditional bridges, this does not require that the surrounding teeth, which may otherwise be healthy, be reduced to fit the anchoring crowns.

Full or partial dentures can also be fixed to implants to eradicate the need for messy dental adhesives while keeping the dentures sturdier and more comfortable than otherwise.

Of course, for a single missing tooth, a beautiful, life-like crown is fitted to the post. These are matched to the color and contour of your natural teeth, perfectly completing your smile.
